The Ukrainian capital Kiev has been rocked by a large-scale ballistic missile attack launched by Russian Federation forces, killing at least one person and injuring many others.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS), the attack left one person dead and four others injured in the Obolonsky district. At the scene, rescuers quickly launched rescue operations and extinguished a fire that broke out in a partially destroyed office building.
The explosions occurred at around 4:30 a.m., shaking several areas of the city. According to preliminary reports, at least four Iskander M/KN-23 ballistic missiles were launched at Kiev. The Kiev Post reported that loud explosions were heard in the historic center of Kiev and neighboring districts.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that major fires broke out in several districts, including Holosiivsky, Podil, Svyatoshynsky and Obolon. In Holosiivsky district, a major fire broke out in a two-story warehouse, while in Svyatoshynsky district, a fire broke out on the roof of a nine-story building. In Darnytsia district, another fire broke out in the premises of a private enterprise.
Rescue teams with more than 80 personnel and 17 fire and rescue units were dispatched to the affected areas to control the fire and search for victims trapped in the rubble. Most of the damage is believed to have been caused by debris from missiles intercepted by the air defense system falling on residential areas.
Rescue efforts and damage assessment are still being urgently carried out to ensure the safety of people and restore order in the capital Kiev.
Russia has not yet made any official comments regarding this attack.
