"As far as I know, the announcement of the tariffs will be made on April 2. They will come into effect immediately and the president has been warning about this for a long time," Bloomberg quoted White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt as saying to the press.
On March 31, President Donald Trump announced that he had "done" with the plan to apply counterpart tariffs to rebalance US trade relations. However, Leavitt also admitted that President Trump continues to discuss with his trade consulting team.
As scheduled, President Trump will announce details of the taxes at 4:00 p.m. on February 2 (Eastern time (March 3, Vietnam time), at the White House Hong Garden. This is an effort to restore the domestic manufacturing industry and reshape the global trade system that he considers "unsuccessful".
Ms. Leavitt did not disclose the scale and extent of the tax, but assessed that President Trump would listen to opinions from countries and businesses that want lower rates.
"The president is always ready to negotiate, but he is also determined to restore justice for American workers," the White House Press Secretary emphasized.
When asked about the impact of the tariffs on the financial market, Leavitt reassured, "Wall Street will be fine".
She also dispelled speculation that the policy could have a negative impact on the US economy. "This will work and the president's advisory team is people with extensive experience. We are determined to restore the 'golden time' of the US and become a superpower in manufacturing" - the White House Press Secretary affirmed.
President Donald Trump has called April 2 a true peak day for the "US First" trade policy, which aims to boost domestic production by costing companies more when transporting goods to the US.
On April 2, President Donald Trump is expected to announce countervailing tariffs and impose tariffs on countries that contribute the most to the US trade deficit of 1.2 trillion USD.
