United Nations Secretary-General concerned about escalating US-Iran tensions

A spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General said that Mr. Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern about the risk of escalating tensions between the US and Iran.

According to Xinhua news agency, speaking at a press conference on August 27 (local time), Mr. Stephane Dujarric - Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General - emphasized: "The Secretary-General expressed concern about any additional measures or statements that could lead to escalation. We continue to witness disruptions in global energy and food flows.

The statement was made after the UN Secretary-General received a letter from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding the new US sanctions, calling on the UN Security Council and UN member states to condemn US economic pressure on Iran. The letter, after being received, was forwarded to the Security Council and the UN General Assembly as prescribed.

According to the UN spokesman, although the conflict temporarily subsided militarily at one point, the current tensions continue to seriously damage the region and the global economy.

Mr. Dujarric affirmed that the only way to reach a long-term and sustainable agreement is through dialogue, and said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highly appreciates the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan and related parties to find a political solution.

Previously, a new wave of tension in US-Iran relations broke out after Washington announced financial sanctions to completely isolate Tehran's economy.

On the social network Truth Social, the US side issued a tough message about establishing a comprehensive financial embargo mechanism against Iran. President Donald Trump emphasized that this is an unprecedented-scale economic pressure campaign, and recommended that third parties limit all transactions or financial support to Iran to avoid the risk of facing related sanctions.

To concretize this orientation, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent officially announced a campaign called "Economic Day D" with the goal of cutting off all financial arteries of Iran. The sanction package targets about 60 entities, individuals and transport ships related to the fields of oil, gold, cryptocurrencies and sensitive technology.

Faced with increasing pressure from the US, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed that the US will not achieve any goals through economic pressure and freeze policies, and emphasized that Iran is always ready to have response plans to protect the economy and national sovereignty.
