China calls for US dialogue instead of increasing trade tensions

On October 15, China called on the US to correct its wrong moves and resolve economic and trade issues through dialogue and consultation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lam Kien made the statement after US President Donald Trump accused China of deliberately stopping imports of soybeans from the US and threatening to stop importing cooking oil from China.

China and the US need to solve related economic and trade issues on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit, Mr. Lam said at a regular press conference.

Mr. Lam Kien affirmed that China's stance in handling bilateral economic and trade issues is "always consistent and clear".

No side wins a trade war or a tariff war, and such moves do not serve the interests of anyone, Mr. Lam Kien emphasized.

Spokesperson Lam Kien also called on Washington to quickly end the wrongdoings, after US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced a 100% tariff on Chinese exports to the US on November 1 or sooner in the hands of China.

At the time, Mr. Greer also accused Chinese officials of provoking conflicts over recent rare earth export control measures.

In response, Mr. Lam Kien said that China will implement export control measures "in accordance with the law", in order to protect regional and global peace and stability, while complying with international obligations to not disseminate weapons. This is an international practice, he added.

Chinas stance is always consistent and transparent, Mr. Lam Kien affirmed.

Finally, Mr. Lam Kien said: In return, the US has both declared a desire for dialogue and continuously threatened to impose heavy tariffs and introduced new restrictive measures. This is not the right way to cooperate with China.
