Mr Zelensky added that Ukraine had taken steps to prevent Russia from conducting a large-scale attack there.
According to Reuters, Mr. Zelensky said that this development occurred in the context that Kiev was waiting for Moscow to send a memorandum of understanding stating the conditions to start ceasefire negotiations.
" Their largest and strongest forces are currently stationed on the Kursk front, aiming to push our troops back from the area and prepare for attacks in the Sumy region," Zelensky told reporters on May 27.
Russian President Putin has said he will establish a "buffer zone" along Russia's border with Ukraine.
Mr Zelensky said that Russia may be targeting a buffer zone of about 10 km wide. Meanwhile, the Russian military has taken control of at least four border villages in the region and has steadily advanced in the past few weeks in some frontline areas in eastern Ukraine, near the city of Kostyantynivka, near Kursk Oblast. However, Mr Zelensky insists the Russian military has been pushed back from the region in the past two days.
Ukraine and Russia exchanged 1,000 prisoners after a meeting between the two countries' delegations in Istanbul nearly two weeks ago, but have yet to reach a ceasefire agreement as desired by Ukraine, the US and Europe.
Mr Zelensky called Turkey, Vatican and Switzerland the most realistic locations for the next rounds of talks with Russia. He also said Malta and several unnamed African countries have expressed interest in holding dialogues. However, Moscow does not consider the Vatican a suitable location for negotiations.
President Zelensky announced that he will attend the upcoming G7 Summit after receiving an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney - the country currently holding the rotating presidency of the bloc. He also said he is likely to attend the next European Union Summit.
Regarding the domestic arms manufacturing sector, Mr. Zelensky said he hopes Ukraine will receive a $30 billion grant to fully develop the existing potential of this rapidly growing defense industry.
