Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksii Honcharenko said that Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian National Assembly) delegates approved Ms. Svyrydenko's nomination for this position with 262 votes in favor. Ms. Svyrydenko is currently serving as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.
On July 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced her nomination of Ms. Svyrydenko as head of the government, signaling the beginning of a major cabinet overhaul as the Russia-Ukraine conflict prepares to enter its fourth year.
Ms. Julyia Svyrydenko was once Ukraine's Minister of Economy. Her role has been especially prominent in the media this year as the mineral deal between the US and Ukraine was signed.
Ms. Svyrydenko, 39, has held many positions in the government of Chernihiv state, northern Ukraine, where she was born and raised.
She was quickly promoted and became Deputy Chief of the Office of the President. In 2021, she became Minister of Economy and Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine.
With this vote, Ms. Svyrydenko became the second woman to hold the position of Prime Minister of Ukraine, after Ms. Yulia Tymoshenko.
Ms. Tymoshenko held this position for a short time in 2005 and then for more than 3 years from December 2007 to March 2010.
