Russian air defense forces have thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow, Russia overnight, RT reported on September 1, citing information from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
According to Russian officials, the first UAV was shot down near Podolsk, 40 km south of Moscow, at around 1:20 a.m. on September 1. About an hour later, another UAV was destroyed while targeting the capital Moscow.
In a series of posts over the next six hours, Mayor Sobyanin announced that several more drones were intercepted in the Stupino, Odintsovo, Leninsky and Ramensky districts of the Russian capital.
Notably, one UAV attempted to target an oil refinery in Kapotnya, a district in southeastern Moscow known for its oil industry. The UAV was successfully intercepted, with no damage or casualties on the ground, Mayor Sobyanin said.
Meanwhile, the head of the Kashira district of Moscow, Mikhail Shuvalov, said that the Kashirskaya power plant here was attacked by three drones overnight. However, the attack did not cause any casualties or damage.
As of 7:30 a.m. local time on September 1, Russian air defense systems were still thwarting attacks, Mayor Sobyanin added. According to preliminary information, the falling debris did not cause any casualties or significant damage. Emergency services were also deployed at the scene.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on the morning of September 1 that a total of 158 drones were shot down or intercepted by electronic warfare during Ukraine's large-scale attack on Russian territory overnight.
Russian air defense forces eliminated 46 drones in the airspace of Kursk region, 34 in the airspace of Bryansk region, 28 in the airspace of Voronezh region and 14 in the airspace of Belgorod region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The capital Moscow was also the target of the latest attack, with seven drones shot down over Moscow region and two other drones over the capital, the statement said.
In addition, eight drones were destroyed in the Ryazan region, five in the Kaluga region, four in the Lipetsk region and three in the Tula region. One to two drones were also shot down in the airspace of the Tambov, Smolensk, Orel, Tver and Ivanovo regions, the Russian Defense Ministry added.
RT pointed out that Ukraine tried to attack the Russian capital, more than 500 km from the front line, with drones. Most of the UAVs were disabled before they could reach their targets.
On August 21, 11 UAVs were shot down in the vicinity of the Russian capital . This was one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow.
