Ukrainian President Zelensky announced the dismissal of the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force on August 30 in a video speech on the Telegram platform.
He stressed when announcing the dismissal of Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk that strengthening the air force at the command level in the interests of national security and reassuring the population is necessary.
The Ukrainian president's decree on the dismissal of air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk was also published on the same day.
After Mykola Oleshchuk was dismissed, Lieutenant General Anatoliy Kryvonozhko was appointed acting commander of the air force, the Ukrainian military reported.
Earlier, on August 29, Ukraine reported that an F-16 fighter jet crashed on August 26 in Russia 's largest missile and drone attack on Ukraine since the conflict broke out in February 2022.
Ukraine received its first batch of F-16 fighters in late July this year after a long debate among Western allies over whether to supply Ukraine with US-made fighter jets.
According to Bloomberg, Ukraine reported that the US has received a preliminary report on the F-16 fighter jet crash that killed the pilot on August 26. US officials have also joined the investigation into the incident.
Before being dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mr. Oleshchuk said that a detailed analysis of the F-16 crash was being carried out by Ukraine. "We need to understand what happened, in what circumstances and who is responsible," Mr. Oleshchuk said.
