On June 16 (local time), the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations (G7) said it would increase military support for Ukraine, including providing additional air defense systems, interceptor missiles and long-range attack capabilities.
The information was released in a joint statement on geopolitical issues at the G7 summit held in France.
In the statement, the G7 countries emphasized their commitment to continue supporting Ukraine in the context of prolonged conflict.
We agreed to strengthen the provision of air defense capabilities, additional systems and interceptor missiles, as well as long-range attack capabilities," the statement stated.
In addition to direct military aid, G7 countries also said they are ready to consider expanding the necessary licenses to help Ukraine strengthen its domestic defense production capacity.
According to the statement, this move may create conditions for Kiev to increase the production of weapons and military equipment right on its territory.
Strengthening air defense support is considered Ukraine's top priority in the context that the country continues to face missile and drone attacks targeting energy infrastructure and military targets.
In the past time, many Western countries have provided Ukraine with modern air defense systems to strengthen its airspace protection capabilities.
In addition, supporting domestic defense production capacity is considered a step to help Ukraine reduce dependence on external supply and ensure long-term defense capabilities.
The G7 statement was made in the context of Western allies continuing to discuss new forms of support for Kiev.
Observers believe that the G7 commitment to increase air defense aid and support defense production may contribute to strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities in the coming period.
