Vietnam calls on Thailand - Cambodia not to let tensions escalate

Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung expressed concern about the complicated developments along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, calling on both sides to restrain themselves.

At the invitation of Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, on December 14, 2025, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung visited and worked in the Kingdom of Thailand.

During the visit, Minister Le Hoai Trung met with the Thai Foreign Minister. The two sides affirmed the importance of the traditional friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries; agreed to continue to strengthen political trust through maintaining exchanges of high-level and all-level delegations, especially in 2026, when the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.

The two sides also agreed to increase contacts between ministries, branches and localities; effectively promote the results of the 4th Vietnam - Thailand General cabinet session.

The two Ministers assessed that economic, trade and investment cooperation continues to be a pillar in bilateral relations, agreed to continue to strive to soon achieve the target of 25 billion USD in two-way trade turnover; substantially and effectively implement the "Three Connections" Strategy; strengthen cooperation in areas with potential and mutually complementary fields such as energy, green transformation, circular economy, digital economy and logistics.

The two sides encouraged businesses of the two countries to expand investment in each country, contributing to the goal of developing the bilateral economy in a balanced, stable and sustainable manner.

The two sides welcomed the close and effective cooperation between national defense and security agencies; reaffirmed their commitment not to allow any organization or individual to use the territory of one country to sabotage another; agreed to continue to coordinate in preventing and combating transnational crimes, drug trafficking, and high-tech crimes.

Discussing regional and international issues, the two Ministers emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and safety in the region; promoted ASEAN's central role, enhanced solidarity and unity within the bloc, coordinated ASEAN's stance and common voice on regional and global issues.

After the Thai Foreign Minister shared about the recent tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border, Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung expressed concern about the complicated developments along the Thai-Cambodian border; at the same time, called on all parties to restrain themselves, not to let tensions escalate, resolve disagreements by peaceful means, through dialogue, in accordance with international law and existing regional agreements and mechanisms.

The Minister affirmed that Vietnam is ready to coordinate with ASEAN countries, including Thailand, to actively contribute to common efforts to maintain long-term peace and stability in the region.

On this occasion, Minister Le Hoai Trung visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand, met with officials and staff of the Vietnamese representative agency in Thailand.

The Minister acknowledged and highly appreciated the Embassy's efforts in foreign affairs, citizen protection and promotion of friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand; suggested that the Embassy continue to promote its role as a bridge, enhance support for the Vietnamese community in Thailand, contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and make positive contributions to the Embassy.
