WHO to send team to China to investigate the origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus

Bảo Châu |

WHO said on June 29 that it will send a team to China next week to investigate the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic.

CNA quoted World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying: "We can fight the virus better when we know its full story, including how it started. We will send a team to China next week to prepare for that.

US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have both said the disease may have leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, although they have not provided any evidence of this; and China has denied it. Scientists say the virus comes naturally.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to leave the WHO, which he believes is too close to China. He has repeatedly stressed that the virus originated from China.

WHO Emergency Program Director Mike Ryan said that there have been major advances in the search for vaccines, but there is no guarantee of success. Meanwhile, countries must use existing strategies, such as social isolation and traceability of disease-related cases.

"Many countries, through the application of a comprehensive strategy, have achieved very low epidemic transmission rates in their countries, but must always be vigilant in case of clusters or small outbreaks," said Mr. Mike Ryan.
