An oil truck crashed into a truck on the highway near Bologna airport in northern Italy on August 6, causing a major explosion.

At least two people were killed and more than 60 injured, Reuters reported, citing local authorities. While AFP quoted a spokesperson as saying that 1 person died and 68 people were injured. Italian authorities are concerned that the death toll could continue to rise.

The people most seriously injured by the burns were police and firefighters. Others were injured as debris and broken glass exploded into the surrounding area.

"The pressure from the explosion was extremely strong. Many people were injured due to broken glass flying in," said Giovanni Carella, local emergency service coordinator. According to him, the tanker truck is said to be carrying liquefied gas.

Police have blocked the road where the accident occurred as well as the area around Borgo panigale, a suburb of Bologna.

Video of the incident shows a tanker truck carrying flammable materials crashing into the rear of a truck on the road with many vehicles moving. The tanker truck immediately caught fire and exploded. The explosion was so strong that part of the overpass collapsed.

The fire spread to a nearby car dealership and several other vehicles also caught fire. According to AFP, firefighters took 2 hours to extinguish the fire.
