Looking at his wife's eyes, John Wilson, 92, grabbed his partner's hand tightly as they lay next to each other on two separate beds in the hospital.
That was the last time the two were together after 62 years of association. According to the Independent, the beautiful moment of the farewell announced by the couple's son on July 10 caused a lot of emotion to viewers.
In May, Mr. Wilson was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and was admitted to Queens Hospital in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire (UK), where Ms. Marjorie, 88, is being treated.
When Willson showed signs of entering his last days and was about to be discharged from the hospital and return to a nursing home, hospital nurse Emma Barker decided to arrange the beds of the two to come next to each other to say goodbye for the last time.
"I can't imagine the feeling of facing the moment of knowing that I won't be able to meet the person who has been with me for more than 60 years in my life again," said nurse Emma. When the two men lay next to each other for 10 minutes, she also took a photo recording the moment of holding their affectionate hand.
Long after that, Wilson passed away on June 15. Mr. Kurt, the son of the two, said he would cherish his parents' beautiful photo forever and "did not know what to say to express his gratitude" to the hospital.
Before passing away, Mr. Wilson confided to his son that meeting his wife for the last time was extremely meaningful.
"My mother lost her memory and was in a nursing home for a while. I take care of my father at home. They have been married for 62 years and love each other a lot," he said, adding that his mother was hospitalized for COVID-19 in March but had "beaten" the epidemic.
"Because my mother lost her memory, I could not say that her father was no longer around. It is truly a difficult time right now. Thank you all very much for the care and love you have given to my parents. I would like to express my special thanks to nurse Emma, who captured the last moment together of the two," he said in a letter of thanks to the hospital.
