In the fourth match of Group A taking place on the evening of August 3rd at Pakansari Stadium, the Vietnamese team played overwhelmingly and won with goals from Nguyen Van Vi, Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Xuan Son.
According to statistics, this is Indonesia's heaviest home defeat in the history of the Tiger Cup, AFF Cup and ASEAN Cup.
Previously, the biggest defeat of the archipelago team at home at the Southeast Asian Championship was only two goals. Indonesia once lost to Singapore 1-3 in the first leg of the 2004 Tiger Cup final and lost 0-2 to this opponent in the group stage of the 2008 AFF Cup.
The 3-0 victory of the Vietnamese team therefore set a new milestone after nearly three decades of existence of the tournament.
This is also the first time the Vietnamese team has defeated Indonesia by a three-goal margin right on the opponent's field. Since 1991, the Vietnamese team has only had one victory on Indonesian soil before this match, with a score of 3-1 in the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia in 2019.
At the Southeast Asian championship arena, the victory at the Pakansari stadium also helped the Vietnamese team take the lead in the head-to-head record against Indonesia. Before the match, the two teams met 13 times at the tournament, each side had 3 wins and 7 draws. The 3-0 result helped coach Kim Sang-sik's team have their fourth victory against Indonesia, and for the first time defeated this opponent with a three-goal difference in the regional arena.
The Vietnamese team soon created an advantage when Nguyen Van Vi opened the score in the 6th minute before Nguyen Hai Long doubled the gap in the 14th minute. This is also the first time the Vietnamese team has scored two goals in the first 15 minutes at the ASEAN Cup since the Tiger Cup 1996.
After conceding two quick goals, Indonesia was forced to push up the squad but could not penetrate the tightly organized defense of the Vietnamese team. In the 71st minute, Nguyen Xuan Son sealed a 3-0 victory after a sharp counter-attack.
This victory helps Vietnam team rise to the top of Group A with 7 points after 3 matches, equal points with Singapore but better in goal difference. Coach Kim Sang-sik's team only needs to win at least one point against Cambodia in the last match to definitely reach the semi-finals of ASEAN Cup 2026.
Meanwhile, Indonesia is forced to defeat Singapore in the final match if they want to nurture hopes of going further.
