Vietnamese athletics wants to make a strong breakthrough

HOÀI VIỆT |

The Viettel Marathon 2024 International Athletics Tournament recently held its competition in Hanoi (Vietnam) with nearly 11,000 participants.

This is the first time an athletics tournament has been organized by the Vietnam Athletics Federation, the Lao Athletics Federation, and the Cambodian Athletics Federation to carry out three stages of competition in each country at specified times.

On the competition day of December 1st in Hanoi, the General Secretary of the Asian Athletics Federation - Mr. A Shuggumarran and the Technical Official of the Asian Athletics Federation - Mr. Kwan Kee came to Vietnam to directly monitor the organization and operation of the tournament by the organizing committee. "We invited the General Secretary of the Asian Athletics Federation and the Technical Official of Asian Athletics to attend this tournament so that they can learn more about the organization of the tournament in Vietnamese athletics. As well as have a better understanding of the tournaments that are being organized more professionally, thereby enhancing the professional reputation of Vietnamese athletics", said Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, in charge of the athletics department (Department of Sports and Physical Training) and General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation.

Athletics is a key sport that the sports industry is drafting a project to develop Vietnam's athletics until 2030, with a vision to 2045. Department of High Performance Sports 1 (Department of Sports and Physical Training) once expressed the view that the project to develop Vietnam's athletics until 2030, with a vision to 2045, if fully developed and implemented, would be one of the basic steps for a model sport that other sports will learn from when building investment and development plans. In fact, grassroots marathons are being developed widely in many provinces and cities, but not all tournaments are organized with reasonable competition routes. For high-performance athletes, standard athletics fields with training facilities that meet all conditions are very rare in Vietnam. The stadium with all the elements and a running surface that meets international standards is My Dinh National Stadium. However, the Vietnamese Athletics Team players rarely get to come here for professional training.

Currently, grassroots marathons always have the participation of the country's top athletes. However, when discussing at the Vietnam Sports Economic Forum 2024, Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports Dang Ha Viet expressed the not unreasonable view that professional and key athletes will have to be calculated to participate in suitable tournaments instead of participating in many tournaments. Because they must improve their expertise from marathon tournaments to have real success instead of just aiming for the goal of winning prizes. In this problem, the most important investment for Vietnam's athletics to develop strongly is still the need for a specialized training center. The issue will be discussed further at the Vietnam Athletics Federation Congress in December this year.
