Viettel Marathon 2024 meets the standards of World Athletics (WA) and Asian Athletics (AA) competition rules. The race is organized by Viettel Military Industry and Telecommunications Group in collaboration with the Asian Athletics Federation, the Athletics Federations of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Athletes will participate in 3 races, starting in Luang Prabang (Laos) on November 3, 2024; The second stage in Hanoi (Vietnam) on December 1, 2024 and the finishing stage takes place in Siem Reap (Cambodia) on December 22, 2024.
High-level running
Certification from the Asian Athletics Confederation allows the Lao Athletics Federation to organize the Viettel Marathon Luang Prabang 2024 according to international standards.
On October 30, 2024, the Organizing Committee of Viettel Marathon announced that the tournament meets the standards of applying the competition rules of World Athletics (WA) and Asian Athletics (AA) taking place in Luang Prabang - Laos 2024, affirming the Organizing Committee's commitment to improving the quality of the tournament.
To achieve this recognition, the race must comply with strict standards for measuring the course as prescribed by World Athletics, the Association of Marathon and Distance Races International (AIMS - WA). This is an important factor to ensure the accuracy of the distance, thereby bringing fairness to participating athletes and facilitating the recording of achievements according to international standards.
Previously, on October 24, 2024, Viettel Marathon was granted a certificate of standard running route for four distances of 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon by AIMS - WA. In addition, AIMS also granted the Organizing Committee permission to use the logo certifying the standard running route on communication and promotion channels, contributing to increasing reliability and attracting attention from the domestic and international runner community.
The four-distance course of the tournament was licensed by the Asian Athletics Confederation after the AIMS measurement report was recognized by the World Athletics Federation.
Also during this time, Mr. Fung Wang Tak, an A-level road surveyor of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), completed the road survey for the 4 distances of the Hanoi stage, the second race in Vietnam of the Viettel Marathon 2024 series, which will take place on December 1, 2024. This is the basis for granting international standard certificates, similar to the Luang Prabang stage.
In addition to the race distance factor, the race must also meet the technical and organizational requirements according to the current Athletics Law and will be supervised by a Technical Delegate appointed by Asian Athletics.
The course being certified by AIMS-WA is an important step forward in the effort to professionalize Viettel Marathon, aiming to improve quality right from the first year, ensuring a professional and fair competition experience for athletes.
“First Time” Milestones
Not only is it the first international marathon hosted by Vietnam, Viettel Marathon is also the first full marathon to take place in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang, Laos, with an expected participation of 5,000 athletes, the largest scale ever in the locality.
The race also received enthusiastic support from the local government. On October 22, at a meeting between the Organizing Committee and the Luang Prabang Provincial Party Committee, Comrade Khamkhan Chanthavisouk, Member of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Secretary and Governor of Luang Prabang Province, expressed his joy when Luang Prabang became the first venue for the Viettel Marathon series, saying that the local government would create the best conditions for the Organizing Committee to complete its work and send personnel to join the Steering Committee of the Race.

Not only that, Viettel Marathon 2024 is the tournament with the highest total prize fund, up to nearly 3.7 billion VND (~ 150,000 USD).
