At the press conference before the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, coach Lionel Scaloni praised his colleague Luis de la Fuente - who directly taught him in UEFA's coaching training course.
The 48-year-old strategist admits to always showing special respect to the coach of the Spanish national team, even though both will stand on two fronts in the decisive match for the championship.
I was worried as soon as the team's bus left the hotel. Spain is a very strong team and has maintained impressive form under Luis de la Fuente," coach Scaloni shared.
Previously, at an event on the sidelines of the World Cup final in New York (USA), coach Scaloni actively hugged his coach after Mr. De la Fuente encountered boos from a part of the audience.
Scaloni revealed that he just wanted to show support for the person who mentored him during his coaching career. "Luis knows what kind of person I am, but he won't know what I think about football," the Argentine coach said.
Assessing the opponent, Scaloni said that the Argentine coaching staff had studied Spain for many months, and also assessed that the two teams have many similarities in their playing philosophy.
We understand how Spain works, know their strengths and will try to limit those qualities. Both teams like to control the ball and actively attack, so I hope the final will bring an exciting performance," he said.
Besides, Scaloni was also asked about the possibility that this will be Lionel Messi's last World Cup.
I don't know. Only Messi can answer that. He always surprises everyone," said the head coach of the Argentine national team.
Scaloni revealed that Messi once shared with him that the whole team has become a part of football history. However, according to the Argentine coach, Messi is the biggest symbol.
Being able to participate in the World Cup final at the age of 39 is extraordinary. We need to appreciate what Messi has been doing and is doing. He is a legend and a role model for every player," Scaloni emphasized.
He also expressed his gratitude to Messi and the current generation of players for bringing the most successful period in the history of Argentine football, and affirmed that the whole team will try their best to close the 2026 World Cup with the championship.
