After a 2-0 victory over Timor-Leste in the second match of Group A of the ASEAN Cup 2026, the Singapore team temporarily rose to the top of the group with 6 points, more than the Vietnam and Indonesia teams (both with 3 points but playing one match less).
Speaking at the post-match press conference, coach Gavin Lee expressed satisfaction with the performance of his players. According to this strategist, Singapore has made progress compared to the opening match against Cambodia when playing more calmly, taking advantage of opportunities effectively and controlling difficult moments of the match well.
Heading towards the away match at the Vietnamese team's stadium on July 31, Mr. Lee admitted that this will be a very big challenge.
Vietnam is not an easy opponent to play against. This is a big challenge and we understand it very well, but it's okay," the Singapore coach shared.
He said that the coaching staff will develop a suitable plan to prepare for the match in Hanoi.
We will come to Hanoi and play with all our ability. The coaching staff will prepare a plan and the whole team needs to make efforts to do their best," Mr. Lee added.
The match between Vietnam and Singapore is considered important in the competition for the top spot in Group A. If they win, coach Kim Sang Sik's team will have many advantages in the race to win tickets to the semi-finals.
Previously, after Vietnam's 7-0 victory over Timor-Leste in the opening match, coach Gavin Lee once said that this result did not fully reflect the developments on the field. He said that Vietnam deserved to win, but Timor-Leste also created many positive moments of play and the score difference partly made the strength of the red shirt team seen higher than reality.
