Nguyen Tien Minh and Vu Thi Trang both participated in the qualifying round for men's and women's singles on the first day of September 9 of the tournament competing in Ho Chi Minh City. However, only 1 person won.
Former No. 1 tennis player of Vietnam Nguyen Tien Minh met opponent Orijit Chaliha (India) in the first match of the men's singles preliminary round but unfortunately lost 1-2 (20-22, 21-18, 11-21). Despite his efforts to compete with experience, his age did not allow Tien Minh to move persistently throughout the match. After losing this match, Nguyen Tien Minh stopped at the tournament.
At the same time, his wife, tennis player Vu Thi Trang, competed in the preliminary round of women's singles, winning 2-1 Aashi Rawat (India) and 2-1 Liang Ka wing (Hongkong, China). 2 victories helped Vu Thi Trang enter the main round of the women's singles event, where she will face Ashmita Chaliha (India) on September 10. Thus, the women's singles event at the tournament has 2 host representatives of Vietnam, Nguyen Thuy Linh (seed number 1) and Vu Thi Trang competing.
Because Nguyen Tien Minh did not make it to the main round of men's singles, Vietnamese badminton only had Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang participating in the main round.
However, in the first match on September 9, Le Duc Phat lost 0-2 Kok Jing Hong (Malaysia) so he was eliminated.
