On June 23, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced information about the plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky by a Polish veteran.

The plot to assassinate the Ukrainian president is planned to be carried out in the city of Rzeszow, southwestern Poland in early 2024. At the time, both Ukraine and Poland had arrested those involved in the plot.

Ukrainian Security Service leader Vasyl Malyuk said the subject's motives stemmed from his nostalgia for the Soviet Union.

The suspect planned to use a drone or a sneak gun to assassinate President Zelensky at Rzeszow City Airport.

Among those involved in the assassination plot were two former colonels who served in President Zelensky's guards. The two were arrested last year.

Also involved in the plot to assassinate the Ukrainian President, a Polish veteran was arrested by the Polish Internal Security Service (ABW) in April 2024 based on information provided by the SBU. Polish prosecutors coordinated with a foreign intelligence agency to carry out the arrest.

The city of Rzeszow, about 70km from the Ukrainian border, has a strategic location for arms transfers and political visits to Ukraine.

It is known that when traveling abroad, President Zelensky often takes a train from the capital Kiev to Rzeszow, then flies again by Ukrainian government aircraft.
