Chess player Trinh Vu Dong has risen to number 1 in the chess rankings announced by the Chinese Chess Association (CXA) in April 2026, after a series of stable achievements over the past time.
Previously, Trinh Vu Dong attracted attention when defeating Lai Ly Huynh in the final of the Ngu Duong Boi 2026 tournament. This title brought a large number of points to the Guangdong chess player, creating an important stepping stone on the rankings.
Because the World Chess Federation currently does not have an official ranking system, CXA's ranking has long been considered an important reference measure of the top chess world, when it gathers most of the world's strongest chess players to participate in tournaments in China.
After the Ngu Duong Boi championship, Trinh Vu Dong continued to maintain stable form with the runner-up position in the Ho Lam Duc Boi tournament, third place in the Thien Xuong Boi and third place in the Chinese National Team Championship. This achievement helped his elo rating increase sharply from 2,795 to 3,400 points.
With the new score, Trinh Vu Dong officially surpassed Manh Phon Due (3,305 points) to rise to the No. 1 position in the rankings. Meanwhile, 2023 world champion Manh Than retreated to third place.
Previously, Manh Phon Due surprised when he held the No. 1 position from the end of 2025 when he was only 17 years old, becoming one of the outstanding young players in the Chinese chess world.
In another development, the reigning champion of the men's national individual event of China 2025, Wang Yubo, is currently ranked 5th in the latest rankings.
Notably, after CXA adjusted the scoring method according to the latest 12-month cycle, many chess players who were involved in previous negative scandals no longer appear in the leading group, causing the top chess rankings to have many changes recently.
