The reason for the penalty comes from Messi's failure to participate in the friendly match between MLS stars and the All-Stars squad of the Mexico tournament on July 24.
Both Messi and Jordi Alba were previously named in coach Nico Estevez's call-up list for this highly anticipated match.
However, the two Inter Miami stars refused to participate without the official approval of the tournament organizers.
According to current MLS regulations, any player who is not called up to the All-Stars will be suspended for one match in the official tournament.
Inter Miami later spoke up to defend Messi, saying he needed a break due to a tight schedule.
Since the beginning of April, Messi has played 22 of his 23 possible matches, including 4 matches at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
At the age of 38, the Argentine superstar is showing signs of being overloaded and the refusal to compete is to protect his fitness for the rest of the season.
MLS member Don Garber affirmed that this was a difficult disciplinary decision. He expressed his respect for what Messi has contributed to the tournament, not only in the field but also in image value.
Garber also said he will consider adjusting the regulations, to reflect the increasingly strict competition schedule.
Without Messi and Alba, Inter Miami will have to face the top team without the two most experienced pillars.
Meanwhile, the All-Stars MLS team still won 3-1 against their opponent from Liga MX without the service of this pair.
