Tiger Cup 1996
In the first ASEAN Cup (called Tiger Cup 1996), the Vietnamese team met the Thai team in the semi-finals. Here, the Thai team defeated their opponents with a score of 4-2, in which striker Natipong scored a double, in addition to 2 goals from Kiatisak and Worrawoot. On the Vietnamese side, Nguyen Hong Son and Vo Hoang Buu were the ones who scored.
Tiger Cup 1998
In the tournament held at home, the Vietnamese team had a great match when they defeated the Thai team 3-0 in the semi-finals. Truong Viet Hoang, Nguyen Hong Son and Van Sy Hung were the ones who scored for the team. Unfortunately, that year the Vietnamese team only won the runner-up position, after losing to Singapore in the final.
AFF Cup 2002
In this tournament, the Vietnamese team under Mr. Calisto led the group, scoring 19 goals. However, in the semi-finals, the team continued to face difficulties against the Thai team, losing 0-4 to their opponents.
AFF Cup 2007
In this tournament, the Vietnamese team continued to meet Thailand in the semi-finals, with a first-leg and second-leg format. In the first leg at My Dinh Stadium, the Thai team won 2-0, with 2 goals from Thonglao and Pipat. In the second leg, the two teams drew 0-0. The Vietnamese team lost with a total score of 0-2.
AFF Cup 2008
This is a historic AFF Cup for the Vietnamese team, with the first time winning the regional championship. However, the team has gone through an extremely difficult journey. In the group stage, Mr. Caliston's team lost 0-2 to Thailand.
In the final, the two teams played again. In the first leg, Vu Phong and Le Cong Vinh scored 2 goals, helping the Vietnamese team win 2-1. In the second leg, Teerasil Dangda scored in the 21st minute, helping Thailand lead 1-0.
It was thought that the match would go into extra time, but in the 90+4 minute, Le Cong Vinh headed the ball back after a pass from Minh Phuong, tying the score at 1-1. This result helped the Vietnamese team win 3-2 overall, thereby winning the championship.
AFF Cup 2012
In this tournament, the Vietnamese team under the guidance of coach Phan Thanh Hung competed in the group stage in Thailand. However, the team did not play successfully, being eliminated early after losing 2/3 matches and drawing 1 match. In the match against Thailand, the Vietnamese team lost 1-3.
AFF Cup 2020
This tournament was held centrally in Singapore, postponed for 1 year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the defending champion, the Vietnamese team easily passed the group stage.
But in the semi-finals, the team lost to Thailand with a score of 0-2 after 2 matches. In the first leg, the Thai team won 2-0 with a double from Chanathip. Although the Vietnamese team tried very hard, they could not reverse the situation in the second leg after a 0-0 draw.
AFF Cup 2022
Vietnam vs Thailand created a dream final match in the previous tournament. In the first leg at My Dinh Stadium, Vietnam drew 2-2 with their opponents. Tien Linh and Vu Van Thanh scored for the home team, while Poramet and Sarach scored for the away team.
In the second leg, Thailand beat Vietnam 1-0, thanks to Theerathon's only goal. With a final score of 3-2, Thailand won the regional championship for the 7th time.
