On the morning of January 2, the Vietnam Olympic Committee (VOC) held a conference to review the work in 2024 and key tasks in 2025.
Speaking at the conference, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung expressed his views on focusing on the 33rd SEA Games: "In recent years, I have heard many people say that the SEA Games is a village tournament, but if we want Vietnamese sports to develop, we must go step by step, from the region, continent to the world. There cannot be a leap, we must practice persistently and make efforts to move up."
"Winning and losing in sports is normal, everyone wants to win, we should not cheer when we win, and criticize when we lose, there must be sharing. Win without being arrogant, lose without being discouraged, we must remember and concretize it. Next is preparing for the Asian sports tournament, we must set a goal of having many medals, not just stopping at having a few. Investment on a large scale but must have a focus, resources are only that, we must adapt to the situation", the Minister emphasized.
According to the report, in 2024, the Vietnam Sports Commission coordinated with relevant units to complete procedures for the Vietnam Sports Delegation with 39 official members to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Next year, with events such as the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, the Asian Winter Games, international conferences... UBOVN will focus on preparing athletes and continue to seek funding sources to support the Vietnamese Sports Delegation to attend the Games.
Speaking at the Conference, Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports Dang Ha Viet affirmed that the goal of the Vietnamese sports delegation is to strive for second place at the 33rd SEA Games.
"At the 33rd SEA Games, there are a total of 574 sets of medals, with 53 sports, the Vietnamese sports delegation is expected to participate in 422 sets of medals with 757 athletes. The expected achievement is 80-90 gold medals. With the sports development strategy until 2030, with a vision to 2045, we must stabilize in the top 3 by 2030, setting high goals for the SEA Games, especially Olympic sports. This year, the Vietnamese sports delegation strives for 2nd place, but to do this, we must have more than 90 gold medals."
"2024 marks a year of many achievements for Vietnamese sports. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Vietnamese sports delegation set a target of having 13-14 athletes participating, then we had 16 names participating. Shooter Trinh Thu Vinh tried hard, had stable achievements, but lacked a bit of luck to win a medal. All other athletes also tried their best, but there was still a gap with other sports delegations," Mr. Dang Ha Viet added.
Last year, the Vietnamese sports delegation did not win any medals at the 2024 Olympics, but shooter Trinh Thu Vinh completed her mission excellently with a 4th place in the women's 10m air pistol event and a 7th place in the women's 25m sports pistol event.
The Vietnamese sports delegation attending the 2024 Paris Paralympics achieved the set target with Le Van Cong winning a bronze medal in the 49kg weightlifting category. The women's volleyball team won the bronze medal at the world championship for the first time, the gold medal at the Asian championship for the second time, and many other impressive achievements.
The Vietnam Sports Administration will continue to seek strong funding sources including functional foods, sportswear, funds for organizing the Departure Ceremony, bonuses for medal-winning athletes, and activities to support the Vietnamese Sports Delegation to participate in international sports events.
