The focus is also the responsibility
In Decision No. 816/QD-TTg approving the program "Developing key sports to prepare for participation in ASIAD, Olympics in the period 2026 - 2045" issued by the Prime Minister, the content specifically states that the investment will be focused on 9 key identified sports including shooting, archery, weightlifting, cycling, boat racing, athletics, swimming, karate and sepak takraw.
In which, the general objective of the Program is: "Building an excellent force of athletes in key sports, both with professional qualifications and good physical strength, and with competitive bravery, capable of competing for medals at ASIAD and Olympics.
Recognizing the birth of the Program for key sports in the 2026-2045 period, sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh (former Director of the High-Performance Sports Department 1, Vietnam General Department of Sports and Physical Training) said that this is a valuable step forward for high-performance sports.
From a professional perspective, Mr. Hong Minh affirmed that when we are identified as key sports, the focus on training and investment will go into the essence of each sport, each event to maximize the strengths of Vietnamese athletes.
When 9 sports are identified as key, managers or each coach and athlete will have the responsibility to ensure professional achievements commensurate with the investment interest. "Above all, if we do not spread out, the opportunity to select, streamline, and professional quality will be really good for high-performance sports" - Mr. Hong Minh added.
Effective investment direction
The highest goal of the Program is for Vietnamese sports to aim for high achievements in the Asian Games (ASIAD) arena and move towards achieving regular medal results at the Olympics.
In each phase dedicated to investment and training, Vietnamese Sports will receive each task according to the 2026-2030, 2031-2035 and 2036-2045 periods. The performance index will gradually increase. With the 2026-2030 task being to have 5 Gold Medals at ASIAD 20 (2026) and 6 Gold Medals at ASIAD 21 (2030), and a 2028 Olympic medal. In the 2031-2035 period, Vietnamese Sports will strive to win 7 Gold Medals at ASIAD 2034 and in the 2036-2045 period, it will strive to have an ASIAD that wins 10 Gold Medals and a Olympic that wins more than 1 Gold Medal.
This year, Vietnamese Sports will enter the ASIAD 20 in Japan. This is the first tournament to start the Program "Developing key sports to prepare for ASIAD and Olympic Games in the 2026-2045 period". The results of ASIAD 20 will be the first step showing the investment and determination of a focused development direction for Vietnam's high-performance sports.
