Speaking at the annual conference of American football, Carlos Cordeiro said that FIFA's Confederations Cup will not take place anymore and the 2-year Gold Cup held once by the North, Central American and Cari Do Football Federations (Concacaf) may not be held.
As is known, the Confederations Cup was introduced by FIFA in 1997 and since 2005 has been considered the starting tournament for the home team of the World Cup. However, this tournament is not receiving much attention in the world and in 2018, FIFA said it was considering canceling the Confederations Cup.
Although FIFA has so far refused to disclose further information, Mr. Cordeiro insists the Confederations Cup will not take place anymore. Its done, Cordeiro said. To replace the Confederations Cup, there will be more intercontinental playoffs to have 48 teams participating in the World Cup.
According to the USSF President, the Gold Cup could share the same fate when the Concacaf region tournament is boring and of poor quality. The Gold Cup only exists in this year and 2021. The tournament can take place but it can't happen," said Cordeiro.
Cordeiro's announcement surprised everyone because Concacaf has expanded the tournament from 12 to 16 teams and will compete this summer. However, there have been previous rumors that Concacaf and the South American Football Federation (Conmebol) are discussing expanding Copa America to increase attractiveness and revenue. This year, Copa America will take place in Brazil with 12 participating teams, with Qatar and Japan as guests.
Meanwhile, Concacaf still announced that the Gold Cup will take place in 2019, 2021, 2023 and will be part of the FIFA competition program.
