Turning roadside wildflowers into bonsai trees for Tet

Gia Lai - From wild trees on the roadside, five-color flowers through the hands of artisans become beautiful bonsai for Tet.

Every Tet holiday, along National Highway 14, through Ia Hru commune, Chu Puh district, gardeners display colorful flower pots with different shapes.

The flower that was once considered a wild plant, growing along the road like wild sunflowers, is now gaining much attention. In recent years, Ia Hru people have recognized the unique beauty of the five-color flower, making it gradually become a favorite choice of visitors from many provinces.

The colorful flowers and rough trunks like ancient trees have the beauty of bonsai art. Realizing this uniqueness, some people in Ia Hru commune, Chu Puh district have hunted down trees to plant, prune, shape, graft and then bring them to the market to earn profit.

Mr. Tran Minh Tuan (residing in Phu Quang village, Ia Hru commune) is famous for his five-color bonsai grafting technique. Over the years, he has sold thousands of trees to major markets such as the North, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Mr. Tuan, his family has prepared nearly 2,000 five-color flower pots to serve the 2025 Lunar New Year. About a month before Tet, gardeners in the North flocked to Gia Lai to buy more than 1,000 pots from him. On average, each five-color flower pot costs between 200,000 and 500,000 VND.

In particular, the beautiful and unique five-color bonsai pots cost up to several million VND/pot. Many gardeners have sold out of five-color flowers since before Tet.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (residing in Phu Quang village, Ia Hru commune) owns more than 300 flower pots. Each pot has its own beauty with many rich colors such as: Snow pink, snow purple, turmeric yellow...

In addition, Mr. Quang also imported rare Thai penta-color flower varieties and skillfully grafted them with local flowers.

Thao Anh Quang, five-color bonsai comes from a wild plant that lives in dry, rocky land, so its vitality is very strong.

However, growers must have the skills to shape, graft flowers, and time leaf plucking and branch cutting so that the flowers bloom in time for Tet to sell in order to have a high income.
