People rush to prepare flowers for Tet
Phu Tai 1 flower village (Kim Dinh commune) is the largest flower village in Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong. The flower growing profession in Phu Tai village has been around for 22 years, and the people who grow flowers here have experience in calculating when to plant flowers to have flowers to sell at many times of the year.
With only 1 month left until the Lunar New Year 2025, farmers in Phu Tai flower village are busy taking care to ensure that chrysanthemums, dahlias, violets, roses... will bloom on time.
Ms. Tran Thi Hue (Phu Tai 1 village, Kim Dinh commune) said that after storm No. 3, chrysanthemums were planted more by Phu Tai villagers because this is a short-term variety and blooms on time. Ms. Hue's chrysanthemums have been planted for more than 30 days and now it is time to light them up so they bloom in time for Tet.
According to Ms. Hue, depending on weather conditions, flower growers will calculate the time to turn on the electricity to support light and warmth, and at the same time turn off the electricity at the right time so that the flowers can grow and develop well.
In addition, to ensure flowers bloom on time as desired, flower growers also base on the weather to cut off the power appropriately.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Truong (Phu Tai 1 village, Kim Dinh commune), storm No. 3 damaged about 50% of his family's chrysanthemum growing area. Due to the storm's impact, the price of rare flower varieties has doubled.
As soon as the weather stabilized after the storm and the rain stopped, the family had to quickly plant and care for new flower varieties, despite the rising costs.
"Luckily, my family was able to restore more than 5 sao of chrysanthemums to sell on the market during Tet. Despite the short time, the quality and care were still carefully invested in, ensuring that the flower garden would be ready to welcome guests during Tet," said Mr. Truong.
Flower prices expected to increase by 30%
Ms. Tran Thi Hue added that this year, her family planted more than 20,000 flowers on an area of more than 3 sao, including many types of chrysanthemums such as chrysanthemums, crystal chrysanthemums, marigolds, etc.
Ms. Hue hopes that the weather will continue to be favorable to ensure the flowers bloom on time, in time to supply the Lunar New Year market.
"Currently, the price of chrysanthemums fluctuates on average from 3,500 - 4,000 VND/flower. During Tet, the price may be about 1.5 times higher," said Ms. Hue.
On December 27, speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Van Cuong - Head of Phu Tai 1 village, Kim Dinh commune (Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong province) said that currently, Phu Tai 1 village has more than 100 households growing flowers all year round.
However, people grow flowers mainly during Tet. Flowers grown in Phu Tai 1 village are supplied to markets in neighboring provinces such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh... Growing flowers for the Tet market has brought good income to many households.
According to Mr. Cuong, at this time, households in the village are actively fertilizing and pruning buds to provide beautiful, fresh flowers for Tet. According to Mr. Cuong, due to the impact of storm No. 3, water flooded the fields, along with the lack of flower varieties this year, so the price of flowers for Tet 2025 is expected to increase by 30% compared to last year.
"This year, the weather is very favorable, so people expect a favorable flower crop with stable output. To produce quality flowers, large flowers, and flowers that bloom evenly on Tet holiday, flower growers in Phu Tai 1 village must be meticulous, take good care of them, and know how to apply the technique of using lights to illuminate the plants at night to stimulate growth, develop evenly, and adjust the flowering time as desired," said Mr. Cuong.
