579 growing area codes
As of July 2025, Can Tho City has about 13,000 hectares of durian production area. Of these, 579 growing area codes (MSVT) have been issued, with a total area of over 9,300 hectares.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, most durian in the area is consumed through traders purchasing in the garden. In particular, there has been a positive shift when some collective economic organizations and farming households have begun to link consumption, supply to retail establishments or through eco-tourism.
Currently, the city has formed 85 cooperatives/cooperative groups/peasant groups with an area of 1,901 hectares. Notably, 10 companies have linked to these organizations to produce durian for export to China, with a total area of 836 hectares.
Although the development of MSVT and raising production awareness has made significant progress, the issue of output and prices is still a top concern today.
Mr. Nguyen Dac Hung - Director of Nhon Tho 1A Hamlet Fruit Production Cooperative (Can Tho City) - shared that the linkage of the consumption of officially fresh durian in China once created a stable output, at times bringing a profit 30% higher than the domestic market. However, in the recent crop, the export market fluctuated, durian prices fell low, and cooperatives were forced to seek domestic consumption opportunities to cope.
At Tan Thuan Nhat Cooperative (Can Tho City), although it has cooperated with companies to export durian, in reality, only 80% of output meets strict requirements. This means that the remaining 20% must find a way to domestically consume or switch to processing. In addition to quality barriers, farmers also face difficulties such as declining consumption prices and slow company purchases.
Opportunities from frozen durian
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, since May this year, durian exports have increased again in many markets such as: China, Thailand, Cambodia...
Notably, in the first 6 months of the year, frozen durian recorded remarkable growth with 388 export lots, reaching 14,282 tons, an increase of more than 3 times over the same period last year. This not only strengthens the confidence of many farmers in the market's recovery but also opens up opportunities from frozen durian products.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Dung - Director of Tan Thuan Nhat Cooperative - expressed: "The consumption of frozen durian will be an opportunity for farmers to expand output, especially for products that do not meet fresh export standards. This will help us reduce consumption pressure and prices when entering the main crop".
Similarly, Mr. Hung also hopes that the recovery and growth of durian products will continue to be maintained to ensure prices as well as output for farmers.
Moreover, he hopes that the attractive opportunity from frozen durian will be a solution to fully exploit the harvested output and increase the overall profit of the cooperative.
