Vietnamese authorities have initiated a criminal case and prosecuted the accused according to the provisions of law in the case of a US national girl being raped in Phu Tho.

On the afternoon of August 20, at the regular press conference, answering reporters' questions about Vietnam's handling of the case of a US-born girl being sexually abused by a subject in Phu Tho, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang said: "Vietnamese newspapers have fully and publicly published information about the case. Vietnamese functional agencies have issued decisions to prosecute the case and prosecute the accused according to the provisions of law.

Previously, according to the announcement of Phu Tho Provincial Police on the afternoon of August 19, from July 21, 2026, the Investigation Police Agency received a crime report from Ms. N.T. Q. T (born in 2002, US nationality) currently residing in Hoan Kiem ward, Hanoi city.

Ms. T denounced Nguyen Minh Hieu (born in 2003, residing in Tu Liem ward, Hanoi city) for having sexual intercourse against her will on July 5, 2026, at apartment SK125 of Lynn Times Thanh Thuy hotel (address in hamlet 5, Thanh Thuy commune, Phu Tho province).

Immediately after receiving the denunciation, the Investigation Police Agency of Phu Tho Provincial Police worked with the victim, people who knew about the incident and related subjects.

On August 17, the Investigation Police Agency of Phu Tho Provincial Police issued a Decision to prosecute the case and prosecute the defendant Nguyen Minh Hieu for the crime of "Rape", as stipulated in Clause 1, Article 141 of the Penal Code.
