Minister of Information and Communications talks about merging with the Ministry of Science and Technology

KHÁNH AN |

The Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Science and Technology will merge and become the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications.

On the morning of December 29, speaking at the conference to review 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025 of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that, following the direction of the Central and the Government, the MIC and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) will merge and become the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications. Therefore, the two ministries need to merge and find common ground to become stronger.

The Ministry of Science and Technology manages technology development in general. The Ministry of Information and Communications manages information technology and digital technology - core technologies, the foundation for all other sectors and fields.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the name of the Ministry of Information and Communications is actually the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, but because the National Assembly saw that both ministries had the word "technology" in them, they cut out the word "technology", and the ministry's name became the Ministry of Information and Communications.

"Technology is the common point, creating synergy, collaboration and resonance of the two ministries. The word "media" in both Vietnamese and English has two meanings, the first meaning is telecommunications, the second meaning is media, which are means of communication such as newspapers, radio, television, social media. The new name of the merged ministry is the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications, which covers all the fields of the two ministries, and also shows the synergy and resonance of the two ministries, which is technology" - the Minister of Information and Communications emphasized.

When merged, over 50,000 digital technology enterprises under the management of the Ministry of Information and Communications will now have faster access to research results of the Ministry of Science and Technology. This will help bring science and technology closer to businesses, and more quickly turn scientific and technological research results into products serving life.

"The two ministries merging together will form a new, very important and very large ministry of the country" - Minister Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed.

The Politburo has just issued Resolution 57, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 2024). This is a particularly important thematic Resolution on Breakthroughs in the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, with many revolutionary viewpoints, tasks and solutions.

The newly merged Ministry - Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications will be the core force to realize this particularly important Resolution.

Resolution 57 identifies the trio of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as the three main pillars for national development in the new era. In which, science and technology is the foundation, creating knowledge and tools. Innovation is the driving force, transforming new knowledge and new tools into ideas and solutions. Digital transformation is the realization of knowledge, tools, ideas and solutions into products and services and popularizing them in life to create real value.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, innovation is also a common point of the two ministries in this trio. Innovation is the bridge between science and technology and digital transformation. Science and technology need innovation to promote application. Digital transformation also needs innovation to change the way of operation, management and creation of new products and services.

Resolution 57 also emphasizes the importance of mastering science and technology to master the digital transformation process in Vietnam. Assigning core enterprises to undertake major digital transformation projects, and assigning core enterprises to master strategic technologies. This is a two-pronged arrow: mastering the digital transformation process and technology and forming large technology enterprises in the country.
