In September 1991, Vietnam recognized Lithuania. On March 18, 1992, the two countries signed a Protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations at the Ambassador level. Currently, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Poland is also a member of the Lithuania delegation. bilateral trade between the two countries will reach nearly 207 million USD in 2024. In the first 3 months of 2025, bilateral trade turnover reached 94.7 million USD, up 94.4% over the same period in 2024. Lithuania has 3 valid direct investment projects in Vietnam with a total investment of about 260,000 USD in the fields of communications, science and technology and healthcare.
On the eve of the visit of President Gitanas Nauseda and his wife, Vietnamese Ambassador to Poland and his wife Lithuania Ha Hoang Hai shared: The Vietnam - Lithuania relationship is a traditional friendship that has been built and nurtured over the past three decades, since the two countries officially established diplomatic relations. The outstanding characteristics of this relationship are political trust, goodwill for cooperation and high complementarity between the two economies despite their different scale and geography. Vietnam has always considered Lithuania a sincere friend in the Middle East of Europe, while Lithuania highly appreciates Vietnam's growing role in Southeast Asia and in ASEAN.
The two countries share many similarities in their vision of sustainable development, international integration, digital transformation and adaptation to global challenges such as climate change, energy security or supply chains. Regarding President Gitanas Nauseda's visit to Vietnam, Ambassador Ha Hoang Hai emphasized that this is the first high-level visit of the head of the state of Lithuania to Vietnam in many years, a very important foreign event, demonstrating the two countries' importance to the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Lithuania, and at the same time opening a new chapter in bilateral relations in the context of rapid international transition with many intertwined opportunities and challenges. The Ambassador added: "The focus of the visit will be high-level talks and contacts between President Gitanas Nauseda and leaders of the Party, State, Government and National Assembly of Vietnam.
This is an opportunity for the two sides to evaluate the overall bilateral relationship, exchange strategic vision on regional and international issues of mutual concern, and propose new cooperation orientations suitable to the development conditions of the two countries in the coming period". The Ambassador revealed that during the visit, Vietnam - Lithuania are expected to witness the signing of a number of cooperation documents in potential areas such as trade - investment, education - training, high-tech agriculture, healthcare, clean energy and digital transformation. In addition, investment promotion activities, business forums and community connections between the two sides will also be organized to create practical conditions for economic and trade cooperation to develop more substantially and sustainably.
"I believe that the visit of the Russian President will contribute to strengthening political trust and promoting strategic connectivity between Vietnam and Lithuania, especially within the framework of ASEAN-EU cooperation.
