According to VNA, on the afternoon of September 26 local time, right after the solemn State-level welcoming ceremony at the Revolution Palace in Havana, General Secretary and President To Lam held high-level talks with First Secretary and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez.
The First Secretary and President of Cuba emphasized that the first State visit to Cuba by General Secretary and President To Lam in his capacity as head of the Party and State of Vietnam is of special significance, demonstrating the high regard and revolutionary solidarity of the two Parties and two countries, contributing to promoting the depth of trust and creating substantive changes for bilateral relations in the coming time.
General Secretary and President To Lam and First Secretary and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez discussed the relations between the two Parties and countries in recent times; expressing satisfaction with the good development of the relations between the two countries at all levels and in all fields.
The two leaders emphasized the similarities between Vietnam and Cuba in history and spirit, in the path to socialism and the strong relationship that was built and forged over time by President Ho Chi Minh and Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.
The two leaders are determined to continue to strongly develop the traditional solidarity, special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba to a new level of comprehensiveness, substance, effectiveness and sustainability, in the spirit of mutual support, cooperation and development, for the cause of development and construction of socialism, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for peace, cooperation and development in each region and the world.
In that spirit, the two leaders agreed to enhance mutual understanding, exchange and coordination on political and strategic issues; improve the effectiveness of the Vietnam - Cuba Intergovernmental Committee mechanism and other mechanisms in the fields of defense, security and foreign affairs.
The two leaders agreed to promote and deepen economic cooperation, jointly study new cooperation methods, remove difficulties, promote the Trade Agreement between the two countries to increase trade turnover to 500 million USD in the next 5 years; create necessary conditions for sustainable business activities of Vietnamese enterprises in Cuba, in accordance with Cuba's policy of attracting investment to develop the economy.
The two leaders supported relevant agencies of both sides to strengthen coordination in researching agricultural production cooperation models to support Cuba in increasing local output and production capacity, developing the agricultural sector, and ensuring food security.
The two leaders also agreed to promote and expand cooperation in the fields of energy, biotechnology, healthcare, tourism, telecommunications, and construction; and promote cooperation between localities and people of the two countries.
General Secretary and President To Lam and First Secretary and President Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez agreed to continue to actively support and assist each other at international organizations and forums.
The two leaders shared the importance of maintaining peace, stability and development; agreed that international disputes must be resolved by peaceful means, on the basis of respect for international law and the United Nations Charter; agreed that relations between countries must be built on the basis of respect for independence, sovereignty, equality, self-determination of peoples and the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for each other's territorial integrity and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.
At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam informed First Secretary and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez about the Party, State and people of Vietnam presenting 10,000 tons of rice to the Cuban people; the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam presenting 500 computers to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba; the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor presenting the Cuban Workers' Center; and some Vietnamese localities also presenting some gifts to the Cuban people.
