Vietnam - Thailand strengthen cooperation in drug prevention and control

On August 14, the 17th bilateral conference between Vietnam and Thailand on drug prevention and control cooperation took place in Hanoi.

Major General Ngo Thanh Binh - Director of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, Head of the Vietnamese delegation and Lieutenant General Phanurat Lukboon - General Secretary of the Drug Control Committee, Head of the Thai delegation - co-chaired the Conference.

In 1998, the two governments signed a bilateral cooperation agreement on drug control, psychotropic substances and precursors. In implementing this Agreement, the two countries have cooperated in organizing many activities such as: Annual and rotating bilateral conferences on drug prevention and control cooperation; organizing conferences, seminars, training courses, etc.

At the conference, the two sides discussed the situation and results of drug prevention and control coordination; experience in implementing drug rehabilitation and reduction; recommended cooperation to improve capacity in fighting and preventing crimes, drug origin assessment and tracing and drug rehabilitation in the coming time.

Major General Ngo Thanh Binh suggested that in the coming time, the two sides continue to promote the effectiveness of the unit hotline as international cooperation officers of the Department of Drug Crime Investigation and Enforcement of the Embassy, Thai Embassy in Hanoi.

Coordinate the opening of joint investigation projects for cases related to transnational drug crimes, considering the establishment of working groups of Vietnam and Thailand working at the scene of the case to conduct joint investigations, questioning and sharing information on transnational drug crime rings; collect relevant evidence to destroy all drug crime rings and organizations, especially drug trafficking and transportation rings from the Golden Triangle region, through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia to Vietnam and to other countries for consumption;

Strengthen information and experience exchange in drug crime investigation, such as: New types of drugs, transportation routes, methods, tricks of operation, experience in detecting drug concearance tricks...;

Continue to effectively implement the LOA Agreement on cooperation in law enforcement and drug control. Thailand's aid under the framework of the Agreement has helped Vietnam effectively implement professional activities and peak periods of attacking and suppressing crimes on the border, contributing to controlling the situation of drug crimes in Vietnam and in the region.

Lieutenant General Phanurat Lukboon believes that after this Conference, cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand will become increasingly effective, meeting practical requirements in effectively responding to the complicated developments of the current drug situation.
