Vinmec Da Nang saves the life of a patient with a giant cerebral aneurysm without having to have a skull surgery

Dr. Vinmec Da Nang successfully handled a giant brain aneurysm with a high risk of death thanks to a stent transferring the flow combined with a coil, without opening the skull.

Small deviations can cause patients to die on the intervention table

Ms. L.T.H.O (68 years old, Da Nang) felt her left eyelid collapsed, her head ached and tired for more than 2 months. At first, she thought this was a common sign of aging. However, the condition of ptosis became more and more serious.

Worried, she went to a hospital in Da Nang for a check-up and was given a brain MRI scan. The results shocked the whole family when she carried a giant aneurysm in her brain, which was at high risk of rupture.

Understanding the danger, the local hospital quickly transferred her to Vinmec Da Nang International General Hospital (VGCL) - where there is a team of experts with extensive experience in handling complex cases of cerebral aneurysms.

Immediately upon receiving the patient, the medical team of the Stroke Neurological Center, Vinmec Da Nang International General Hospital assessed this as an extremely dangerous giant cerebral aneurysm case that required emergency intervention.

However, the surgery poses many challenges for the medical team. Dr. Ton That Tri Dung - Director of the Stroke Neurological Center, Vinmec International General Hospital, Da Nang, said: "The aneurysm is very large in size, the vessel walls are extremely thin and weak, just a small deviation during the intervention can cause the aneurysm to break and the patient dies right on the intervention table. The cerebral artery intervention team and the anesthesia team must work with high precision to ensure the safety of life and avoid the risk of disability for patients.

New hope for patients carrying "explosive bombs" in their heads

The cerebral aneurysm bag is like a potential "bomb" hidden in a blood vessel, if it bursts, it can cause a stroke, severe brain damage or a high risk of death. Faced with these challenges, Vinmec's team decided not to use traditional craniotomy, but instead chose minimal invasive intercranial intervention using stent transfer technique combined with coil placement (metallurgy). This is the leading modern method today in treating cerebral aneurysms, bringing safety to patients and minimizing complications.

An micro-utral tool is brought from the thigh artery to the brain, accurately approaching the location of the aneurysm. First, the doctor places the coil in the aneurysm pocket to temporarily block blood flow, preventing the risk of rupture. The stent is then placed at the location of the damaged vessel, helping to direct blood flow out of the duodenal follicle, while restructuring the vessel wall naturally during the recovery phase.

All procedures are performed on the digital Defense Defense Association (DSA) scanning system, allowing for detailed brain vascular images in real time, helping the doctor operate accurately.

After more than two hours of stress intervention, the patient's cerebral aneurysm was completely removed, without complications. The patient was alert, not paralyzed, recovered quickly and was discharged in a stable condition. Thanks to the stent transferring the flow, the risk of clots and bulbs is almost zero, the machlar wall is "attached" sustainably from within, marking a successful intervention, saving the patient from the death wish line.

Technical skills require experience, accurate coordination between doctors and modern equipment systems. Currently, in Vietnam, the stent transfer method combined with coil placement is only commonly deployed in some major stroke centers, said Dr. Dung.

Previously, such complicated aneurysms often had to be transferred to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for treatment intervention. Now, people in the Central region can access advanced intercranial intervention techniques right in the locality.

Currently, Vinmec Da Nang is mastering many of the highest techniques of neuropathy intervention such as coil placement, stent placement, mechanical thrombosis removal, cerebral vascular re-communization, deformed venous knots... to help stroke patients and cerebral aneurysms receive timely treatment, not only recover well but also live healthy, without complications later.
