Causes and forecasts
World gold and silver prices simultaneously fell after the August jobs report in the US was more positive than expected. This data pushed bond yields up, the USD strengthened and changed expectations about the interest rate policy of the US Federal Reserve (Fed).
The precious metals market is under pressure after the US released August jobs data. Accordingly, the non-farm sector created 162,000 jobs, significantly higher than forecast.
Adjusted data for June and July also showed that the economy added 55,000 jobs. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%.
After the report, the yield on US Treasury bonds with a 2-year term increased to about 4.37-4.38%, the highest level since January 2025. The yield on 10-year terms also rose to about 4.77-4.78%.
These developments have caused the market to increase expectations that the Fed may adjust interest rates in the meeting on September 15-16. The probability predicted by the market for the possibility of the Fed raising interest rates has increased to about 60-65%, from nearly 50% before the jobs report was released.
The market is currently focusing its attention on US inflation data for next week, in which the consumer price index (CPI) is expected to be released on September 11. These will be important data to further assess the direction of US monetary policy.
The diễn biến of gold and silver in the coming time will depend significantly on US inflation data. If CPI and PPI continue to show high price pressure, expectations that the Fed maintains high interest rate policies may put pressure on precious metals. Conversely, weaker inflation data may strengthen expectations that the Fed will ease policy.
