World gold prices continued to face downward pressure in the last trading session of the week, as the precious metals market was dominated by a tougher signal from the US Federal Reserve (Fed).
In the context of the US stock and bond market holiday on Juneteenth, thin liquidity makes price fluctuations even more easily amplified.
After the latest policy meeting, the Fed kept interest rates unchanged in the 3.50-3.75% range, but the message sent shows a trend towards a tighter stance.
Instead of expecting interest rate cuts, investors are starting to consider the possibility of the Fed raising interest rates in 2026. This increases the opportunity cost of holding gold - an unprofitable asset, thereby putting pressure on the price of precious metals.
According to Mr. Laurence Booth - Global Market Director at CMC Markets, the current gold decline is leaning towards a risk-reducing trend rather than panicked sell-offs.
This expert believes that the downward trend is relatively orderly, although gold has lost more than 200 USD/ounce in just a few days. Notably, the signal to watch is physical demand, as the difference in China and some major markets is weakening, causing gold to lack separate support momentum.
The geopolitical factor in the Strait of Hormuz is still a risk to note. However, the impact on the market is no longer strongly inclined towards inflation as in the initial tense period.
Commercial transport has gradually resumed after the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, helping Brent oil prices fall back to around 79.5 USD/barrel, while WTI oil is around 75.85 USD/barrel. However, transportation activities are not completely normal due to navigation risks and train congestion, causing the safe haven factor not to disappear completely.
Technically, the 4,180-4,200 USD/ounce zone is considered a near resistance for gold prices. If it crosses this zone, the price may head towards the 4,370-4,390 USD/ounce area. Conversely, if it breaks the low in the session around 4,121 USD/ounce, gold is at risk of falling deeper to the 4,040 USD/ounce zone, and further to 4,020 USD/ounce.
In the coming week, investors will monitor a series of US economic data, including preliminary PMI of manufacturing - services, PCE index, number of unemployment claims, last Q1 GDP and orders for durable goods. These data may reshape interest rate expectations, thereby strongly impacting the short-term trend of gold prices.
