World gold prices increased amid a decrease in the USD index. Recorded at 22:45 on January 30, the US Dollar Index, which measures the fluctuations of the greenback against 6 major currencies, was at 107.520 points (down 0.27%).
Gold prices surged to a three-month high and are on track to hit a new record high, with safe-haven demand and technical buying fueling the gains in both precious metals.
The market remains concerned about the new US President's trade and foreign policy, especially new tariffs. Gold futures for April delivery rose $29.8 to $2,823.4 an ounce, while silver futures for March delivery rose $0.692 to $32.08 an ounce.
Asian and European stocks were mixed but largely up overnight, Kitco reported. Many Chinese markets remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday. Germany's Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX hit record highs, while Britain's FTSE 100 is also nearing an all-time high. US stock indexes are expected to open mixed but with a slight uptick when trading in New York begins.
The US Federal Reserve (FED) in the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Wednesday sent the message that they will keep interest rates unchanged for the foreseeable future. The FED emphasized that "inflation remains high".
However, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell dismissed the notion that there had been no progress in controlling inflation at a press conference. He said the change in wording was a “small wording adjustment” — “we just chose to shorten that sentence.” Powell declined to comment on how President Donald Trump’s policies might affect Fed policy. Markets did not react significantly to the FOMC statement or Powell’s remarks.
The European Central Bank (ECB) today cut interest rates by 0.25%, marking the fifth consecutive meeting implementing monetary easing policy, amid economic data showing the Eurozone is stagnating.
In other major markets, Nymex crude oil futures were little changed, trading around $72.50 a barrel. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note is currently at 4.504%.

On the other hand, sellers are looking to push prices below strong technical support at $2,750/ounce. The immediate support is at $2,800/ounce, followed by the previous session low of $2,794.9/ounce.
