One week reduced by 6 million VND per tael
On the morning of July 26, Saigon Jewelry Company kept the price of SJC gold bars at 137.5-141.5 million VND/tael, while 1-5 gold rings were only listed at 137-141 million VND/tael. This is also the price announced in the last session of the week on July 25.
Compared to July 18, the buying price of SJC gold bars decreased by 7 million VND/tael, and the selling price decreased by 6 million VND/tael. On the selling side, gold bars lost about 4.1% after only one week.
SJC gold rings also decreased sharply. The buying price decreased from 143 million to 137 million VND/tael, while the selling price decreased from 146.5 million to 141 million VND/tael, equivalent to a decrease of 5.5 million VND/tael in one week.
Meanwhile, world gold prices last week closed the session at 4,001.70 USD/ounce, still 23% lower than the record level set at the end of January.
The world gold peak price in January 2026 reached a record level of about 5,587 - 5,594 USD/ounce at the end of January.
Gold selling price lower than peak 49.8 million VND
The historical peak of SJC gold bars was set in the session on January 29, 2026, when the selling price at one point reached 191.3 million VND/tael, and the buying price reached 188.8 million VND/tael. After setting a peak, gold prices turned down at the end of the session and experienced many strong fluctuations in the following months.
Compared to the current selling price of 141.5 million VND/tael, each tael of gold bar has decreased by 49.8 million VND, equivalent to about 26% compared to the peak.
This decrease reflects the difference between the two listed selling prices. The actual loss of buyers at the peak is even higher, because when reselling, customers have to transact according to the enterprise's purchase price.
However, the picture changes if the comparison time is extended to one year.
On July 25, 2025, SJC gold bars were listed by brands around 119.7-121.7 million VND/tael. Compared to the current selling price, gold bars are still 19.8 million VND/tael higher, equivalent to an increase of about 16.3%.
If calculated according to actual transactions, people who bought a tael of gold bars a year ago at a price of 121.7 million VND and resell them now at a purchase price of 137.5 million VND still make a nominal profit of about 15.8 million VND, equivalent to nearly 13%.
At the same current price level, investment results vary greatly depending on the time of participation. Buyers in the peak area are suffering high losses, while those holding from July 2025 still have double-digit profits.
Do not rush to consider the decline as a bottom-fishing opportunity
Talking to reporters, Ms. Le Thi Huong Tra, Institute of Banking Science Research, Banking Academy, said that investors should not rush to consider the decrease in gold prices as an opportunity to "catch bottom", especially in the context that prices are still high and the market is still highly volatile.
According to Ms. Tra, buyers should not use borrowed capital or pour too much proportion of the portfolio into gold. In case of long-term accumulation needs, investors can consider buying in installments, instead of chasing after strong price increases.
Ms. Tra noted that gold is more suitable for the goal of preserving asset value and hedging risks, rather than being seen as a short-term speculative channel. Buyers also need to monitor the difference between domestic and world prices, because the difference formed from scarcity and speculation sentiment may narrow when market management policies change.
