LD26068: 9th grade female student with stage 3 lung cancer, family exhausted

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - 9th grade female student discovers stage 3 lung cancer, family falls into a deadlock due to high treatment costs, no longer able to manage.

We came to the house located deep in the dirt road under construction in Thanh Huong hamlet, Nhon Phu commune, where Bui Anh Thu (born in 2011) is fighting cancer every day with overlapping worries.

The house has been built for many years, surrounded by muddy vacant land, making it difficult to travel. The atmosphere in the house is heavy when all activities revolve around taking care of Thu.

Ms. Pham Thi Hai Yen - Thu's mother - choked up and said that her daughter developed the disease about a month before the Lunar New Year 2026, at that time Thu finished the first semester, 9th grade. Chest pain appeared suddenly and rapidly, making the family unable to react in time.

At 3 am, my child was in so much pain that he couldn't bear it, the family had to take him to the emergency room immediately. Doctors discovered a tumor on his chest, and after only a week, it was determined to be malignant," Ms. Yen said.

According to her, in the past, the family only lived as a garment worker with an income of about 10 million VND per month. Although life was not abundant, it was still enough to raise two children to study and take care of their elderly parents.

Now my child is seriously ill, the family has to move to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment. Expenses are increasing day by day, while income is gone, we are really stuck," Ms. Yen said, her eyes red.

Ms. Yen added that the doctor diagnosed Thu with stage 3 lung cancer, requiring multiple chemotherapy sessions. Each infusion costs from 9 - 10 million VND, far exceeding the family's ability.

The family has paid more than 20 million VND for 2 prescriptions, even though they have insurance, not including travel and accommodation expenses in the city. In the following times, I don't know where to get money. In the near future, I have to let my child stay in a temporary shelter near the hospital to reduce costs," she added.

Ms. Tam Thanh, who lives near Thu's house, said that since Thu fell ill, the family atmosphere has always been heavy. Cries and sighs often echoed in the small house.

“Previously, the family lived frugally but peacefully. Since the child got sick, everything has been turned upside down. Looking at the child in pain is very pitiful, and the parents are worried to the point of collapse,” Ms. Thanh said.

According to Ms. Thanh, although people around have joined hands to support somewhat, the amount of money is only enough to cover a very small part of the initial costs. The burden of treatment still weighs heavily on the family's shoulders. "We can only help a little, and the cost of long-term treatment is too large. The family is almost unable to manage, seeing this scene, everyone feels sorry," Ms. Thanh added.

Mr. Le Huu Tinh - Secretary, Head of the People's Committee of Thanh Huong hamlet said that Thu's family has always been well-fed, not well-off. Both husband and wife are workers, with unstable incomes. "The family also has to take care of parents who are nearly 70 years old, in poor health, unemployed. Two young children are of school age, so life is only at the level of making ends meet," Mr. Tinh said.

According to Mr. Tinh, since Thu got sick, all sources of income have almost stopped, while treatment costs are increasing. This is a situation that really needs the joint help of the community. "The locality has also mobilized support, but resources are limited. We really hope philanthropists will pay attention and help so that he has the opportunity to continue treatment and overcome this difficult period," Mr. Tinh added.
