We came to the house of Mr. Nguyen Van Dau (born in 1964) nestled among lush trees, silently in Truong Tho hamlet, Quoi An commune, Vinh Long province.
Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thuong - Mr. Dau's wife - said that the family is considered a near-poor household, without fields, gardens or valuable assets. Before getting sick, the couple's life mainly depended on the water hyacinth weaving profession, making products and delivering goods every week to earn more than 300,000 VND.
Ms. Thuong added that in addition to weaving water hyacinth, she and her husband also do heavy jobs such as building rice field banks, weeding... "whoever hires me, I do whatever, as long as I have money to take care of food and clothing".
More than 2 months ago, Mr. Dau suddenly became seriously ill. "He died of part of his brain, paralyzed half of his body, now lying in one place, all daily activities have to be done by relatives, unable to speak," Ms. Thuong choked up.
Since he fell ill, the family has almost completely lost their income. She tries to weave water hyacinth but only earns more than 100,000 VND per week, not enough for minimum living expenses.
Currently, Mr. Dau has to eat through tubes, his health is seriously depleted. He no longer has the ability to control his personal activities, and his diuresis is entirely dependent on his wife. Every day, the family has to use about 4 diapers. A bag of 20 diapers costs 200,000 VND, becoming a significant expense.

Not to mention, his weekly drug bill is up to about 600,000 VND, but it's just taking it sparingly, and his condition shows no signs of improvement. "Many times when he runs out of money, he has to reduce the dose of medicine, and he doesn't know where to get it from," Ms. Thuong said with tears in her eyes.
Not only her husband is seriously ill, Mrs. Thuong herself also has many diseases. Previously, she also worked as a hired rice weaver, but now she has to quit completely due to heart disease and myocardial ischemia. She also suffers from mild goiter, is often tired, and has gynecological diseases that have lasted for nearly 10 years, causing her health to decline.
Ms. Tran Thi Day - a resident in the hamlet - said that Mr. Dau's family situation is very pitiful. "The two spouses are gentle and hardworking, but now they are constantly sick. We can only help with a little rice and a little money, but everyone is in difficulty," Ms. Day said.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy - Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Quoi An commune, Mr. Dau's family is indeed a near-poor household in the locality, with particularly difficult circumstances.
Local authorities also regularly pay attention to and mobilize support, but resources are limited, so the joint efforts of philanthropists are very necessary.
In the middle of a small, desolate house, the thin wife takes care of her seriously ill husband every day, her eyes are always filled with worry. Their lives now only rely on the kindness of the community.
A sharing, even small, at this time can help Mr. Dau's family alleviate the pain and have more hope to overcome the current difficult period," Ms. Thuy added.
