We came to the house located deep in the fields in Phuoc Loi C hamlet, Phuoc Hau ward, Vinh Long province, where Mr. Tran Thanh Phong is fighting every day with end-stage kidney disease full of complications.
The small house is silent in the middle of the field, no laughter, only slow footsteps and heavy breathing. Mr. Phong, 27 years old, lies silently on the bed, all personal activities must be supported by relatives.
According to the medical record, Mr. Phong was diagnosed with stage 5 kidney disease, and is being treated with peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant monitoring. His health condition is increasingly depleted, with many dangerous complications.
Ms. Bui Thi Hong Loan (born in 1978), Mr. Phong's mother, said that before developing the disease in 2024, Phong worked as a marketer, delivering soft drinks. Since the illness became severe, he had to have abdominal dialysis, continuous blood transfusions, and then fell and had a brain hemorrhage.
According to Ms. Loan, Mr. Phong's memory is sometimes awake, sometimes forgetful, and he is no longer able to walk. Everything must be helped by someone, from eating to hygiene, looking at her child like that makes her heart ache.
Since my son fell ill, the family has fallen into poverty. The cost of medicine is about 4-5 million VND per month, not to mention non-insurance costs, many types of medicine must be bought separately, which is very expensive," Ms. Loan added.
According to her, although there is health insurance, only a part is paid, and many arising expenses make it impossible for the family to manage. The family has borrowed everywhere, and the current debt is more than 100 million VND.
Each time they are hospitalized, the family falls into a deadlock. The cost is tens of millions of dong, now they no longer have the ability to worry. They only hope to have money for their child to continue treatment and prolong their life.
According to the doctor's instructions, the long-term treatment direction is to maintain peritoneal dialysis and wait for kidney transplants. However, the transplant cost is too high, far exceeding the family's ability, which has been exhausted after a long period of treatment," Ms. Loan added.
Ms. 8 Hanh, a resident living at the beginning of the road to Mr. Phong's house, said that Phong is gentle, hardworking, and has always lived by hired labor. Since Phong got sick, the whole family has fallen into a abyss, everyone who sees it feels sorry.
People in the neighborhood also regularly come to visit and provide some support. But the circumstances are too difficult, the people's strength is limited, I just hope there are many kind hearts to help so that I have a chance to continue living," Ms. Hanh added.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Ngan - Head of Phuoc Loi C hamlet said that Mr. Phong's family does not have production land, mainly living by working as hired laborers. When he became seriously ill, his income was almost gone, and life became even more difficult.
According to him, the current house is also a great solidarity house that was previously supported. When Phong got sick, the family had to sell the cow - the biggest asset - to cover treatment costs, now there is nothing left to manage.
In the middle of the deserted field, Mr. Phong's small house is still silently fighting against the pain of illness and the burden of food and clothing. A miracle at this time probably only comes from the sharing of the community.
