On the afternoon of June 24, in a room of less than 10 m2, Ms. Do Thi Hoa (Kien Bai 2 residential group, Thien Huong ward) sat leaning against the wall, listening to her daughter Pham Ha My (10 years old) read a story in a textbook. Every now and then My turned to look at her mother's expression to promptly support her if she was tired.
More than 2 years ago, Ms. Do Thi Hoa was a kindergarten teacher, during the day she went to class to teach children, and in the evening she opened pre-primary classes for children around the neighborhood. Recalling those days, Ms. Hoa's eyes were red, recounting the time on April 1, 2024, when she knew she had a malignant disease. "Before that time, I often had headaches but subjectively thought it was due to a cold, or mental stress. On April 1, 2024, I asked the agency for permission to go for a medical examination in Hanoi and received the result that I had a brain tumor, the tumor was nearly 4 cm at that time" - Ms. Hoa choked up.
Not believing in fate, Ms. Hoa went for examinations in many places but only received similar results. The days after that were a long series of treatment days in Hanoi, making her exhausted both physically, mentally and economically. The three mothers and children had to rely on their elderly grandmother, who sold water near the national highway every day to take care of food and clothing for the whole family.
For nearly 2 years, her mother's treatment has been often away from home, feeling sorry for her grandmother and mother, the two sisters Pham Ha My still taught each other to study, continuously maintaining excellent student achievements. Ha My's older sister just finished the high school graduation exam and applied for a seasonal job to help her grandmother. Ha My is only 10 years old but quick-witted, active, and has been a good child and excellent student for many years. Outside of school hours, My hoes the soil, pulls grass, waters vegetables for her grandmother, cooks rice, and gives medicine to her mother. Every noon, she also looks after the water stall for her grandmother to rest. "On the full moon day and the first day of each month, My goes to the communal house and pagoda around the house to ask for her grandmother and grandmother to be healthy" - Ms. Hoa recounted.
When asked about her future dreams, Ha My shared: "My mother always wants one of the two sisters to follow the medical profession, so that is also what I want in the future. I want to become a doctor, treat patients, especially patients in difficult circumstances like my mother.
Regarding the circumstances of Pham Ha My's family, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - Principal of Kien Bai Primary School - said that Pham Ha My is not only an excellent student but also a role model of resilience. The family is very difficult, her mother has been seriously ill for many years, but Ha My strives in her studies and life. Understanding and sharing with students, the school and the homeroom teacher regularly care for, grasp, and encourage Ha My both materially and spiritually... Recently, leaders of Thien Huong ward also directly visited and encouraged Ha My and her children to overcome difficulties. "The school also hopes that organizations and individuals will know about the case of Pham Ha My, help the family overcome difficulties, and that My herself can go to school and continue her dream of becoming a doctor in the future" - a representative of Kien Bai Primary School said.
