Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi (born in 1993, residing in Hoa Dong hamlet, Phu Hoa commune, An Giang province) and Ms. Le Thi Nhanh have not a very well-off life when making a living by farming. Despite unstable incomes, the couple still tried to nurture their small family. However, right at the time Ms. Nhanh was preparing to give birth to her second child, Mr. Muoi's family suddenly received bad news.
A few months ago, Mr. Muoi and his wife's first son, baby Nguyen Le Hoang Dat (born in May 2024), continuously had a high fever, so the family took him to An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for examination. After many tests, doctors concluded that the baby had blood cancer. That result shocked the whole family because before that the baby was still developing normally.
Immediately after that, baby Dat was transferred to Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for intensive treatment.
According to Mr. Muoi, the doctors developed a treatment regimen consisting of 7 courses, each course lasting about 1 month. The cost for each course of treatment is about 50 million VND, not including the cost of medicine outside the list, accommodation, travel and many other arising expenses. This is an amount that exceeds the ability of a farming family like him and his wife.
Sharing about his current situation, Mr. Muoi choked up and said: "The doctor said that my child's illness needs long-term treatment, at least 2-3 years to have hope of stabilization. Each treatment course costs about 50 million VND, while before, my husband and I only farmed, and our income was just enough to eat and live. My wife just gave birth to her second child more than 1 month ago, I had to quit my job to take care of baby Dat in the hospital, so from that day until now, my family has not earned a single penny.
To have money for my child's treatment, my husband and I have to borrow everywhere, but there is still a long way to go, now my husband and I don't know how to manage to have money for my child to continue treatment.
Currently, baby Hoang Dat is being treated at the City Children's Hospital. The journey ahead will last many years with very large costs. Mr. Muoi's family hopes to receive the joint efforts and help of philanthropists so that the baby has more conditions to continue treatment and nurture the hope of overcoming blood cancer.
Sharing about the circumstances of Mr. Muoi's family, a representative of the local government said: "Mr. Muoi and his wife mainly farm and do whatever they are hired to do, so their income is precarious, only enough to cover living expenses.
Since baby Dat got cancer, the economic burden has piled up, and the family has almost fallen into poverty. We really hope philanthropists and benefactors will join hands to help so that the baby has more conditions to continue treatment.
