A romance drama, “Motel California” is based on the 2019 novel “Home, Bitter Home” by Shim Yoon Seo, and tells the story of Ji Kang Hee (Lee Se Young), who grew up in a motel run by her father, which is also her home.
On her 20th birthday, Kang Hee decided to move to Seoul (South Korea) to pursue her dream of becoming an interior designer. After 12 years, she gradually reached the peak of her career, but for one reason, she decided to return to her hometown.
Here, she reunites with Cheon Yeon Soo (Na In Woo), her childhood friend and first love. He is currently a veterinarian in the village.
As a work that follows the broadcast schedule of "When the Phone Rings" - a movie that has been causing a stir recently - besides the expectations about the pairing of Na In Woo and Lee Se Young, the content of the movie causes many concerns, because it is somewhat similar to "Welcome to Samdalri".
The key point is that the male and female leads are each other's first love. The plot of the female lead leaving her hometown to start a career in Seoul and then returning, while the male lead stays in his hometown to work and is loved by the villagers, is also similar.
However, the media still expects that "Motel California" will have surprises to attract audiences despite following a familiar pattern, as the female lead Lee Se Young has just revealed that the romantic story between Kang Hee and Yeon Soo will be what makes the film different.
“They say that if there is just one person in the world who listens to your story, you can survive. ‘Motel California’ is such a story and Yeon Soo can become that person for the person she loves.”
Describing her character, the actress said, Kang Hee is someone who is always steadfast against strong opponents but gentle with vulnerable people. She is stubborn, obstinate, does not give up easily but is also very delicate.
Lee Se Young has high hopes for this project. The Korean star said that she always wants to be known as an actress whose acting makes people curious, especially with a healing and warm film like “Motel California”.
“The main theme of the film is the story of human life and healing. I believe that viewers will find healing through the characters - who, despite their imperfections, still support and care for each other while facing both sadness and joy.”
“Motel California” is scheduled to air on the evening of January 10, 2025 - one week after the film “When the Phone Rings” ends.
