"The Ancestor's House" by Huynh Lap and Phuong My Chi is a box office phenomenon; ranking No. 1 at the Vietnamese box office, surpassing the revenue of films currently showing at the same time.
According to Box Office Vietnam, as of the afternoon of February 22, the film earned more than 60 billion VND after 2 days of official screening and 2 days of early screening.
It is predicted that Huynh Lap's film will soon reach a revenue of 100 billion VND, even 200 billion VND if it maintains good performance.
What is the reason why "House of Ancestors" attracts audiences?
To be objective, "House of Ancestors" is not a very good project. The film made many unfortunate mistakes. In particular, despite efforts to incorporate spiritual, humanistic and traditional cultural elements, the film is still limited in terms of visual language.
Some segments in the film are criticized by the audience for still carrying a web-drama feel with camera angles, layouts and worn-out transitions.
In addition, the special effects to recreate supernatural phenomena are still unreal.
However, the film still attracts audiences in its theme - exploiting cultural and spiritual elements.
In particular, the scene of making banh xeo, or a busy family preparing for a death anniversary was praised by the audience for conveying the culture of the Southern people.
Learning and recording the customs of worshiping idols and ancestors in the house, expressing the strong identity and cultural spirit of Vietnam is also a factor that helps the film attract audiences.
The film was released at a time when many projects such as "The Four Guardians", "The Heart Light", "The Billion Dollar Kiss" ... had cooled down, so they did not meet many competitors.
In addition to Huynh Lap, choosing Phuong My Chi to star is also a wise direction for Huynh Lap. The female singer has a large number of young fans. In addition, her first exposure to cinema with a leading role has made the audience curious.
Phuong My Chi also plays a fairly good role in My Tien. Besides Phuong My Chi, actors such as Hanh Thuy, Puka, Huynh Dong, Kieu Linh... also brought uniqueness to the character.
In particular, the good point of the film is that it raises the issues of "heavy male and female", gender discrimination, patriarchy... and the worship of grandparents, the preservation of ancestral altars as well as family cohesion...
