This decision surprised many audiences as the work is still maintaining its attraction at the box office.
According to data from Box Office Vietnam, as of June 22, the movie Ma Xo has grossed more than 145 billion VND. Currently, the revenue of the movie Ma Xo on June 22 alone reached more than 1.1 billion VND and ranked in the top 3 of Vietnamese box offices.
This achievement helps the work become one of the highest-grossing Vietnamese horror films of all time, and also recognizes a remarkable step forward of the horror film genre exploiting folk cultural material.
The information about stopping filming was confirmed by the producer 856 Pictures. Sharing about this decision, producer Nguyen Ngoc Thach said that the current revenue level is a result that far exceeds the initial expectations of the crew.
Ma Xo achieved a current revenue level that truly exceeds everyone's expectations and we are very proud of the journey we have gone through. However, the project also has longer-term orientations in the coming time, so we decided to stop film screenings at cinema systems from June 23rd," he said.
According to a representative of the producer, this is a decision that has been agreed upon between the production unit 856 Pictures and the co-producer and distributor CJ HK Entertainment after the film completed its commercial journey with positive results.
Released from June 5, Ma Xo is the second film of 856 Pictures after the family psychological film "Cuc vang cua ngoai". The film marks the first time director Phan Ba Hy has directed a long-term film project, choosing to exploit horror themes from legends and folk beliefs familiar to Vietnamese people.
