Ninh Binh breaks through thanks to Trang An heritage and green tourism

NGUYỄN TRƯỜNG |

Ninh Binh is becoming an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists thanks to its green and sustainable tourism development strategy. Notably, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex - World Cultural and Natural Heritage, is considered the "heart of the billion-year-old heritage city".

Decision on systematic, correct and sustainable tourism development

Through each development stage, Ninh Binh always adjusts policies to suit reality and resources, in which tourism is a top priority. In 2001, the Provincial Party Committee issued Resolution No. 03, determining the economic shift from "brown" to "green", using tourism instead of the construction materials industry.

Since then, the province has focused on preserving landscapes and historical relics to serve tourism. Developing green tourism, exploiting and preserving the ecosystem and cultural heritage, becomes a consistent goal of Ninh Binh.

Resolution No. 15-NQ/TU dated July 13, 2009 of the Provincial Party Committee is an important foundation to promote strong development of Ninh Binh tourism in recent times. To realize the resolution, the Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 07/KH-UBND dated July 17, 2009, specifying the contents and ensuring determination not only on paper.

The 22nd Ninh Binh Provincial Party Congress (term 2020-2025) identified investment in tourism infrastructure and developing the spearhead economic sector as one of three strategic breakthroughs, creating a strong change in the economic structure, from the construction material exploitation industry to the green growth model.

Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU dated October 29, 2021 on tourism development for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045, along with Conclusion No. 07-KL/TU dated May 12, 2021 on continuing to implement Resolution 02-NQ/TU 2016 has specified the tourism development strategy associated with the conservation of Trang An Heritage.

From a young industry, Ninh Binh tourism has gradually become a smoke-free industry, developing sustainably towards greening, bringing practical economic value to the local community.

Possessing Vietnam's only "perfect" world heritage is valued at 213 billion USD

Mr. Bui Van Manh - Director of Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Tourism - said that Ninh Binh's consistent strategy is to develop green tourism, develop sustainable and community-based tourism. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to rely on 3 main pillars: People, businesses and the State.

Ninh Binh is transformed into a rich and unique natural resource and owns a huge cultural and historical heritage, with 1,821 relics, including 298 provincial relics, 81 national relics and 1 mixed cultural and natural heritage of the world Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex. This is an invaluable asset for tourism development.

In order to promote the existing potential and strengths, the province has established an effective and close cooperation model between the State, businesses and people. In particular, specially attaching importance to consensus and active participation and responsibility of the local people, because they are both a living heritage, and directly protect, preserve heritage and tourism resources.

Because of such a "handshake" of consensus and harmony in tourism development, in recent years Ninh Binh has always been voted by international tourism sites as an attractive tourist destination, in the group of 10 provinces and cities that welcome the most tourists in the country.

Mr. Manh said that one of the fulcrum points that helped Ninh Binh tourism break through was the recognition of Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 2014. Recently, the provincial Department of Tourism coordinated with UNESCO and experts to organize an international conference on economic value and development of Trang An Heritage brand.

At the workshop, experts, scientists, and managers from Vietnam and abroad discussed the "Economic aspects of the world heritage - lessons from global models and orientations for Trang An World Heritage" and "Tourism economy and sustainable development scenarios for Trang An World Heritage and policy recommendations".

"The workshop agreed on the method of estimating the total economic value of the heritage, estimating that Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex has a total economic value (TEV) of about 213 billion USD. This figure is determined based on 10 core groups of values such as entertainment value, Karst landscape, biodiversity, archaeology, festival culture..." - Mr. Manh said.
