Confidence Queen is adapted from the 2018 Japanese comedy The Confidence Man JP, following the three scammers Yoon Yi Rang (Park Min Young), James (Park Hee Soon) and Myung Gu Ho (Joo Jong Hyuk). With extraordinary talent, they carry out sophisticated scams targeting against against againstwers from all walks of life.
In the first 2 episodes, Scrap Queen recorded low viewership ratings, reaching 1.1% and 1.5%, respectively. In episode 1, the trio committed a scam in a casino. In episode 2, they plan to deceive Jeon Tae Soo (Jung Woong In) - the chairman of a charity fund but is actually a loan shark with high interest rates, hiding 50 billion won from the black fund.
Told in a humorous style, but hidden behind the motives of the 3 main characters behind each scam, Scking Queen still has not many new points compared to the usual comedy - crime genre. The details in the film that appear are somewhat exaggerated, especially the scam in episode 2 that happened too late on the plane, making viewers feel unreasonable.
Along with that, Park Min Young's performance in the film is receiving a lot of controversy. Taking on the role of a scammers with an IQ of 165, a person with foreign thoughts, the actress was criticized for not being smooth in the role, having awkward comedy routines, and having unnatural gestures. In particular, every time the character Yoon Yi Rang changes his emotional state from humorous and charming to serious expressing clearly his awkwardness, the audience experience is somewhat affected.
However, a part of the fans also spoke up to defend him, saying that Park Min Young's acting style is suitable for the character with a personality attitude (unstable psychological state, sudden behavior).
Previously, sharing about the role, the actress said that when reading the script, she understood why Yi Rang had to become a personality disorder who opposed society. This character seems to act sudden, but is actually always planning very carefully, including option B and option C. I see some part of myself in this character, but I am not as crazy as Yi Rang, she said.
According to Park Min Young, she is an actress, so she always wants to try her hand at vivid, energetic roles with many action scenes. This character gives me the opportunity to express my acting style flexibly, even more explosively than before. However, the Korean star's change did not resonate as expected.
