After nearly 7 years of absence, what made you decide to return to cinema with such a vibrant pace?
- Actually, the period of time I stopped working was quite long. After previous projects, I received a lot of love from the audience. Hearing those words, I was moved and felt that I needed to reciprocate that love. This time back, I want to be more serious with the profession, trying to touch the emotions of viewers through each character.
Some opinions say that this year you are "covered" in cinema, is that luck or pressure?
- That is definitely luck, but also comes with pressure. The current film market is very vibrant, there are many young actors and very diverse. It is commendable that I returned and was still trusted by the producer and director to be assigned roles. However, I always set my own criteria: Do not choose superficial roles. I only accept characters that I believe can be well portrayed and really like. Choosing roles carefully is also a way to respect the audience.
Have you ever rejected many projects in your comeback period?
- Yes! After "Immortal" and even when I returned to the profession, I refused quite a few invitations. Not because the project was not good, but because I felt I was not suitable or not confident enough.
Does refusing the role affect your finances?
- I don't let financial factors dominate my career decisions. When choosing the right character, I work with a happier and more sublimated mindset. In the past 7 years, even if life is somewhat difficult, I still choose a simple lifestyle for myself. I believe that when I maintain balance, I will be more steadfast in the face of pressure.
You used to admire the profession of the famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio. What did you learn from this star?
- I like the way he invests in each role. When receiving a project, he focuses maximally, including changing his appearance. But when the film is finished, he returns to very ordinary life.
What is special about the role of Mr. Thien in the Tet movie "God-given Treasure"?
- This is the first time I have tried my hand at a comedy role and also the first time participating in a Tet movie. Initially, I was quite nervous because I had never done this type of role before. But after the movie premiere and receiving positive feedback, I felt lighter. I hope the character will bring laughter and positive energy to the audience at the beginning of the year.
Playing a comedy role for the first time while the audience is familiar with Quach Ngoc Ngoan in action roles, does the strong male lead make you encounter difficulties?
- Not exactly difficult, but the psychological pressure is quite high. I work hard with the director and screenwriter. On the film set, I receive a lot of support from co-stars such as La Thanh - who is very subtle in the comedy segment. Those comments help the character become more complete.
For you, what measures a successful movie?
- Revenue is important, but not everything. Some films are successful in art, some films touch social issues. "Cramped Heart" is highly appreciated for its expertise, while "Heaven of Blood" creates an effect because the topic is close to reality. In my opinion, a successful film is when it touches the emotions and interest of the audience.
So how did the character Mr. Thien in "God-given Treasure" come to you?
- Initially, I was quite hesitant because I had never acted in a comedy. But when I read the script, I liked this character. Maybe many other actors refused, but for me it was fate. When I believed in the role, I wholeheartedly invested in it.
During the period of stopping filming, did you ever think about leaving cinema?
- Never! I still follow colleagues and new projects. The passion for cinema is still there. Right from when I came to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue the profession, I decided to stick with cinema.
What are your Tet plans this year?
- This Tet, I will spend time promoting the movie with the crew in the first days of the year, then return to my hometown to reunite with my family.
Will you show your children your new movie on Tet 2026?
- Maybe I will show it to my daughter at a suitable time. The previous movies were too young for the children to watch.
